There are nine public school districts in the El Paso area, with a total enrollment of 170,842 and 9,716 graduates for the 2008-2009 academic year. There are 41 private schools in El Paso, with a combined total enrollment of 8,862 students, or approximately 5% of all school-aged children in El Paso.

 

 

District Information

 

El Paso County is served by nine school districts, four of which service portions of the city of El Paso*:

  • El Paso Independent School District*,
  • Ysleta Independent School District*,
  • Canutillo Independent School District*,
  • Socorro Independent School District*,
  • Fabens Independent School District,
  • Anthony Indepenent School District,
  • San Elizario Independent School District,
  • Tornillo Independent School District, and
  • Clint Independent School District.

El Paso Independent School District

Located in El Paso, Texas, the El Paso Independent School District is the largest district in the Texas Education Agency's Educational Service Center. With more than 63,000 students in 92 campuses, EPISD also is the seventh largest district in Texas and the 57th largest district in the United States. It also is El Paso's largest employer with more than 9,000 employees and has an annual operating budget of $446 million.

 

Ysleta Independent School District

From its beginnings in the 1930's as a rural education district with one high school and a handful of middle and elementary schools, the Ysleta Independent School District has grown into one of the major school districts in the state with nearly 44,888 students and 7,155 administrators, teachers and staff. The district has 58 campuses, which sprawl through an urban area stretching from Northeast El Paso to the East and Southeast areas of the city. A nationally recognized area of historic missions, homes and Indian settlements can be found within the district's boundaries.

Socorro Independent School District
The Socorro Independent School District is located in the Southeastern portion of El Paso County, Texas.  It serves Socorro, Horizon City, and the eastern portion of the City of El Paso. The District covers 136 square miles of El Paso County. The District's northern boundary is the Texas/New Mexico line its southern boundary is the Rio Grande River.  SISD is one of the fastest growing school Districts in the State of Texas. The District has twenty-one elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools, one early childhood center, one alternative school, and a community education program. The District employs over 7,000 community members and serves a population of 41,000 students.

Canutillo Independent School District
Canutillo Independent School District's boundaries encompass fertile farm lands, sprawling desert plains, and five small communities with a total population of about 15,000 residents. The growing rural communities of Canutillo, Vinton, Westway, Borderland, and Montoya are part of El Paso County and located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains along the Rio Grande between El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Standardized Test Scores

 

TAKS Test

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test is a standarized test used in primary and secondary schools in the state of Texas. The test assesses students' attainment of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies skills required under Texas education standards. See the chart below for details.

ACT

The ACT, or American College Testing, is a standardized collegiate examination. The ACT is used an indicator of academic aptitude and readiness to enter college, covering English, mathematics, science, and reading, plus an optional writing test. See the chart below for details.

SAT

The SAT Reasoning Test, much like the ACT, is a standardized collegiate test that assesses critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills; each of these three sections has a possible score of 800 points.

Graduation Rates

 

The graduation rates are the number of high school graduates for a given year divided by the number of 8th graders enrolled 5 years prior. A significant number of students continue their high school education or attain their GED certificates. See the tables below for details.

Completion Rates

The comparison is based upon completion II rates, defined as students who graduated, continued high school, or received General Educational Development (GED) certificates by August 31st of the year reported.
